Herbert L. Schmidt

Herbert L. "Herb" Schmidt, 89, of Jefferson City, passed away Thursday, January 20, 2011, at the Golden Living Center in Jefferson City. He was born August 25, 1921, in Taos, a son of the late Herman B. and Catherine (Schaefer) Schmidt. He attended Liberty School near Taos. Herb worked for Barnes Construction, Boehm's Sawmill and also helped on the family farm near Taos. He was a veteran of the United States Army and served in South Korea from April 1946 until February 1947. He was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Taos and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Wyman S. Basinger Post 35. Herb enjoyed fishing, traveling, and playing with children. He is survived by three sisters: Junice Sheriff of St. Louis, Morina Boehm of Taos, and Frances Groves of Jefferson City; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by two brothers: Alfred "Red" Schmidt and Art Schmidt; and three brothers-in-law: Paul Sheriff, Howard Junior Groves and Clarence Boehm Sr. Friends will be received from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday at the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Taos, where a prayer service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, January 25, 2011, at the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Taos, with Fr. Wayne M. Boyer officiating. Interment with full military honors will follow in the St. Francis Xavier Cemetery.
