Lawrence Popp (Veteran)

Lawrence W. Popp, age 77, of Jefferson City, passed away Tuesday, January 11, 2011, at Villages of Jackson Creek in Independence, after a lengthy period of Parkinson's disease. He was born September 25, 1933, near Brazito to Walter and Helen Stroessner Popp. On December 22, 1956, he was married to Laverne M. Linsenbardt, who survives at their home. He attended Ambrose school and was a 1951 graduate of Eldon High School. Lawrence was an Army veteran, serving his country during the Korean War from 1954 to 1956. Lawrence entered college after his tour in the service. He graduated from Missouri School of Mines in Rolla in January of 1960, majoring in Civil Engineering. After college he was employed by the U.S. Navy in Port Hueneme, California from 1960-1961, transferring to Whiteman Air Force Base in Knob Noster, where he was employed until his retirement in 1990. Lawrence loved fishing and catching the big ones on trout lines. He was known for his love of projects, fixing things that needed it and trying new inventions. He also was a bowler, bowling his highest game of 299, until his health condition forced him to give up the game. Lawrence and Laverne owned and operated Popp's Orchard in Sedalia for several years. Lawrence loved the time spent with family, whether it was going on summer vacations or just spending time together at home. He was a longtime member of the St. Pauls Lutheran Church in Sedalia, before moving his membership to Immanuel Lutheran Church at Honey Creek on December 9, 2005. In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children and their spouses, Debra and Larry Ewald of Oak Grove, Michael and Tammie Popp of Kansas City, and Janette and Erwin Concepcion of Stillwater, Minnesota; brothers and sisters-in-law, Calvin and Lilly Popp of Eldon, Ralph Popp of Jefferson City, and Roy and Bonnie Popp of Mexico; six grandchildren, Matthew Ewald and fiancÈe Jocelyn, Aaron Ewald, Brian and Scott Popp and Lindsay and Hailey Concepcion; also nieces, nephews, cousins and lots of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Mary Helen Popp. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Monday, January 17, at Immanuel Lutheran Church at Honey Creek with Pastor Jeffrey Schanbacher officiating. Interment will be in the Immanuel Lutheran Church at Honey Creek. The family will receive friends from 2:00-4:00 p.m. at the Scrivner-Morrow Funeral Home in Russellville.
