Arthur Kolkmeyer (Veteran)

Mr. Arthur J. Kolkmeyer of Columbia, formerly of Jefferson City, died Thursday, February 17, 2011, at Boone Hospital Center. He was born November 8, 1922, in St. Louis, a son of Edward H. and Wilhelmina Kolkmeyer, and was married in 1973 to Ann M. Schumann, who survives at the home. Arthur attended Catholic and public schools in St. Louis and joined the U.S. Army Air Corps in October 1942, serving until his honorable discharge in 1946. In the military, Arthur served as a Chief Control Tower Operator and was a flight instructor at various air fields, including San Francisco and in Salt Lake City at March Field, Williams Field and McClellan Field. Upon his discharge from the Army Air Corps, Mr. Kolkmeyer began his career as a counselor with the California Youth Authority until transferring to Missouri, where he was appointed the first Institutional Parole Officer in the State of Missouri. He was subsequently promoted to District Supervisor, Probation and Parole, and then to his position as one of three parole analysts in Missouri, serving in that capacity until his retirement in 1978. He retained his membership in various state parole organizations. Mr. Kolkmeyer was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and the Cathedral of St. Joseph in Jefferson City until moving to Columbia in late 2010. He is survived by his wife, Ann M. Kolkmeyer, of the home; a daughter, Lynn Godfrey and husband Neil; a son, John Kolkmeyer and wife Sharon; three grandchildren, Joshua, Monique and Mindy; loving nieces and nephews, Christa, Fred and wife Anne, Robert and Amy, Johanna and husband Bill; a sister-in-law, Dolores Kolkmeyer; and nieces Judy, Carol, Ann and Connie. He is also survived by several cousins and numerous loving friends. Arthur was the youngest of two children, and was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Edward J. Kolkmeyer; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Friends will be received from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m., Saturday, February 19, 2011, at the Houser-Millard Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at the Cathedral of St. Joseph with Fr. Clarence Wiederholt and Fr. James Schaefer officiating. Interment with full military honors will follow in Resurrection Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may be made to Masses or a charity of the donor's choice.
