Velma King-Turner

Velma B. "Mickey" King-Turner, 78, of Jefferson City, passed away Tuesday, February 8, 2011. She was born November 24, 1932, in New London, the youngest child of the late Beatrice and Art King. She married her beloved William "Billy Bob" Turner on August 2, 1953, in Jefferson City. He preceded her in death on October 6, 1995. Mickey worked in the Proof Department of Central Bank for 31 years, retiring in June 1995. In her spare time, she enjoyed knitting and crocheting blankets and dolls. She was an avid fan of Missouri Tiger basketball and St. Louis Cardinals baseball, cheering even when the games were not televised. "I'll see it on the radio" she would always say. She also loved talking to and spending time with her family, including traveling around the state with Billy Bob to hear him play saxophone with his band and later in life, trips to "the boat" with her youngest daughter, Bev, and long phone calls to get "the scoops" from her oldest daughter, Robin, and prayer partner, Helen Ferguson. She leaves to mourn her passing two daughters, Robin Mitchell and Beverly Gardner; five grandchildren, Misty (Everett "Tony") Young, Gerald Mitchell, Carol Mitchell, Randy Mitchell and Sidney Gardner; one great-granddaughter, Sierra Young; two sisters, Katherine Green and Marie Campbell; numerous nieces and nephews; and her special prayer partner, Helen Ferguson. She was also preceded in death by her son-in-law, Gerald Lee Mitchell; one sister, Oneta Welch; and four brothers, Benton King, Richard King, Chester King and Ray King. The family will welcome Velma's friends from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., Saturday, February 12, 2011, at the Second Christian Church, where funeral services will follow at 12:00 p.m., with the Rev. Geneva L. Whittler officiating. Interment will follow at Hawthorn Memorial Gardens. Expressions of sympathy may be made to Hospice Compassus, American Cancer Society, or Breast Cancer Awareness.
