Clarence Hammann (Veteran)

Clarence R. Hammann, 97, of Jefferson City, died Monday, August 29, 2011, at Capital Region Medical Center. He was born October 24, 1913, in Jefferson City, a son of Joseph H. and Bertha (Loesch) Hammann. He attended Trinity Lutheran School. Clarence served in the United States Army, entering basic training at age 20. He served in World War II before transferring to the Army Reserves, then serving in the Missouri National Guard until his retirement in 1973 as a Sergeant 1st Class after 40 years of military service. While in the Guard, Clarence was a cook and mess steward and was given the nickname "Cabbage" by his fellow Guardsmen. He worked for Schanzmeyer Ford and later Capital City Ford in Jefferson City until his retirement. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, American Legion Roscoe Enloe Post 5, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1003 and a life member of the Trinity Lutheran School Alumni Association. He enjoyed working on the family farm that he grew up on, raising cattle, chickens and vegetable gardening. He would sell his produce and eggs to private customers and businesses. He enjoyed playing pinochle with family and friends. In 1935, Clarence was the first person in Cole County to shoot a wild boar. He is survived by numerous nieces and nephews and great- nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers: Albert, Martin and Walter Hammann; and one sister: Margaret Beck. Friends will be received from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday at the Houser-Millard Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, September 2, 2011, at Trinity Lutheran Church with Rev. Samuel Powell officiating. Interment with full military honors will follow in Hawthorn Memorial Gardens. Expressions of sympathy may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church.
