John Alexander Ullman, 84, of St. Thomas, died Wednesday, August 24, 2011, at Capital Region Medical Center. He was born May 30, 1927, in Carroll, Iowa, a son of Anthony and Edna Bernice (VanWinkle) Ullman. He was a 1941 graduate of Loras Academy in Dubuque, Iowa. John served in the United States Army Air Corps in the Philippines during World War II until his honorable discharge in 1947. Following his military service, John attended Stanford University in California before graduating from Oregon State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1951. He was employed as a QC Inspector at the Callaway Plant from 1976 to 1986. In 1986 he began working for Cole County Public Works, where he retired in 1995 as a Senior Engineering Technician. He was a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, the Holy Name Society, Knights of the Holy Sepulchre, Past Faithful Navigator of St. Jude 4th Degree Assembly, St. Thomas Knights of Columbus Council 2149, Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 2693 and American Legion Roscoe Enloe Post 5. John's many hobbies included flower gardening, reading, traveling, watching Cardinals and Royals baseball and Chiefs football, playing cards and dancing. He was especially fond of playing with his many grandchildren. He was united in marriage in 1950, to Joanne Kemmerer, who preceded him in death in 1974. On January 21, 1978, in St. Thomas, John was united in marriage to Norma Mary Schmidt Lueckenhoff, who survives at the home. Other survivors include one son, Chris Ullman (Laurie) of Chicago, Ill.; one daughter, Carol (Ron) Roberts of Eugene, Ore.; three stepsons, Bill (Diane), Jim (Janet), and Larry (Linda) Lueckenhoff, all of St. Thomas; one step-daughter, Judith (David) Schroeder of St. Thomas; one brother, Bill Ullman (Phyllis) of Portland, Ore.; one sister, Phyllis Ullman of San Francisco, Calif.; one sister-in-law, Rose Schmidt of Jefferson City; three granddaughters, 16 step-grandchildren, three great-grandsons and two great-granddaughters. He was preceded in death by one step-grandson; two brothers, Paul and Gerald Ullman; and one sister, Bernice Grieg. Friends will be received from 2:00 to 7:00 p.m., Sunday, at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, beginning with a Rosary at 2:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, August 29, 2011, at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, with Fr. Mark Porterfield officiating. Interment with full military honors will follow in the St. Thomas Cemetery.
