Mark Boyer (Veteran)

Mark Allen Boyer, D.Ed., age 95 years, of Jefferson City, Mo., died Thursday, September 23, 2010, at Capital Region Medical Center. Dr. Boyer was born in St. Louis on February 8, 1915, a son of Mark Ulrich and Julia Rose Walsh Boyer. Dr. Boyer dutifully served his country as a pilot in the United States Navy during World War II, and it was while he was stationed in Providence, R.I. that he married his beloved Harriet Ida Schauber on September 16, 1942. She preceded him in death on May 17, 2010. Dr. Boyer graduated from Maplewood High School in St. Louis and earned his Bachelor's degree in Elementary and Secondary Education at Westminster College and his Doctorate of Education at Washington University. For more than 30 years, Dr. Boyer played an integral role in the educational development of countless Missouri youth as the Principal of University City High School and Assistant Superintendent of the University City Public Schools. Dr. Boyer and his wife made their home in Normandy and later lived in Laurie before moving to Jefferson City in 1985, where they enjoyed participating in several square and round dancing organizations both as members and as teachers, visiting with their friends at Heisinger Bluffs, and spending time with their great-grandchildren, who doted on them and kept them busy with tea parties, birthday celebrations, and musical performances at the Boyer Ranch. Lovingly referred to as "Pop" by his family, Dr. Boyer is survived by his two sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Peter and Diane Boyer of Jefferson City, and Mike and Bonnie Boyer of Littleton, Colo.; his five grandsons and their wives, Mark and Lori Boyer of Oak Park, Ill., Dr. Greg and Kristin Maienschein Boyer of Jefferson City, Mo., Tim and Mayuko Boyer of Culver City, Calif., and Scott Boyer and Theo Boyer, both of Denver, Colo.; and his seven great-grandchildren, Lily and James Boyer, Kate, Will, and Liza Boyer, and Sakura and Neo Boyer. Dr. Boyer was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, and his two sisters, Carol Kelly and Elizabeth Boyer. A private family memorial service at Wesley United Methodist Church will be held at a later date.
