Claranne Vogel

Sister Claranne Vogel, SSND, 88, formerly of Jefferson City, died Sunday, Sept. 19, 2010, at St. Anthony's Medical Center in St. Louis, Mo. She was born Dec. 21, 1921 in Tipton, Mo., the daughter of Frederick W. and Clara Sailer Vogel. She was baptized Ruth Elizabeth Vogel. She attended St. Peter's Elementary School and St. Peter's High School in Jefferson City. She entered the congregation of the School Sisters of Notre Dame in 1940, taking the name Sister Claranne. She professed first vows in 1943 and final vows in 1949. Sister Claranne graduated from LeClerc College in Belleville, Ill., in 1949, and earned a master's degree in education from Loyola University in New Orleans in 1959. Sr. Claranne was an educator for 31 years, teaching science from 1943-1974 in Catholic schools in Washington, Mo., Valley Park, Mo., Belleville, Ill., Baton Rouge, La., Marrero, La., Breese, Ill., St. Charles, Mo., Cape Girardeau, Mo., and St. Louis, Mo. From 1974-1983, she was maintenance director at the Sisters' retirement home at Villa Gesu, St. Louis. She served as financial administrator at Notre Dame High School in St. Louis from 1983-2000. She ran the Post Office at the Notre Dame Motherhouse in St. Louis from 2000 to the present. Survivors include: two sisters, Velma Vogel Leary and Mildred Vogel Ovaitt, both of Jefferson City, Mo.; many nieces and nephews; and her Notre Dame Sisters in Religious Life. Sister Claranne was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Cornelia and Dorothy; and four brothers, Frederic J. Vogel, Arthur Vogel, Gerald Vogel, and Jerome Vogel. The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Sept. 23, 2010, in the Notre Dame Motherhouse Chapel. Burial was in the Motherhouse cemetery.
