James William Nordstrom, Ph.D., 81, of Jefferson City, died Wednesday, October 6, 2010, at St. Mary's Health Center. He was born on Feb. 21, 1929, in Eagle Bend, Minn., the son of the late Alvin and Anna Sandberg Nordstrom. He was married on Oct. 4, 1986, in Jefferson City to Paula Ann Wankum who survives at the home. Mr. Nordstrom was a 1947 Salutatorian graduate of Eagle Bend High School; received a Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Education from the University of Minnesota in 1952; a Master of Science degree in Animal Husbandry from the University of Minnesota in 1959; and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Animal Husbandry with an emphasis in Nutrition from the University of Minnesota in 1964. He completed additional training in human nutrition in a two-year post-doctoral program in the Department of Nutritional Sciences at the University of California at Berkley. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. Mr. Nordstrom taught high school agriculture in West Concord, Minn., from 1956 to 1957; was Assistant Professor in Nutrition at the University of Illinois from 1966 to 1968; Assistant Professor in Animal Science at the University of Minnesota from 1968 to 1972; and Professor of Nutrition, Extension and Research at Lincoln University from 1972 until his retirement as Professor Emeritus in 1999. He was a member of First United Methodist Church where he served as usher, attended the Harmony Sunday School Class, and volunteered with the Food Pantry. He was a member of the Audubon Society; Sierra Club; Evergreen Investment Club; Learning in Retirement and the LIR Book Club; American Legion; and was the volunteer ombudsman at Golden Living Center. He enjoyed traveling, reading, and all things about the natural world, especially birds, and protecting the environment. He had a great fondness for the family dog, Sadie. Other survivors include two sisters, Janet (Lowell) Swenson, Burnsville, Minn.; and Ruth (Robert) Harvey, Edina, Minn.; two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Nordstrom, Eagle Bend, Minn.; and Carol Scott, Portland, Ore.; two brothers-in-law, Dr. Robert P. (Patty) Wankum, Jefferson City; and Dr. Gerald (Jackie) Wankum, Creve Coeur, Mo.; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Clinton Nordstrom and Harold Nordstrom; one sister, Evelyn Nordstrom; and one sister-in-law, Jean Lyons Wankum. Funeral services will be 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 9, 2010, at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Mark Dumas officiating. Burial with full military honors will be in Resurrection Cemetery.
