Reverend William Mosby

Reverend William J. (Bill) Mosby, 83, of Columbia, formerly of Belton, died Friday, October 1, 2010, at the University Hospital in Columbia. Rev. Mosby was born January 31, 1927, in Belton, to Pauline and Frank Mosby. He was a graduate of Belton High School, attended Southwest Missouri State University and received a Masters of Divinity degree from Midwest Baptist Theological Seminary in Kansas City. He was married to JoAnn Savage on April 2, 1948. Bill's career was varied but always marked by service to others. At the age of 17 he enlisted in the Marine Corps and served in the Pacific Theater where he was wounded on the Island of Okinawa. Following the war, he attended and graduated from the Kansas City embalming school and worked in Siloam Springs, Ark. and George and Son's Funeral Home in Belton. After several years he attended college at Southwest Missouri State and took a position as a safety engineer for Kemper Insurance Company. In 1960, he formed Mosby Insurance Company in Belton and owned and operated it for 17 years. During that time he also served four years as the mayor of Belton and 12 years, as the municipal judge. In 1976, Bill sold his insurance business and he and JoAnn served as missionaries in North Yemen. Upon their return from overseas, he entered Seminary. While studying he served as the Pastor of Freeman Baptist Church in Freeman. At graduation they moved to Fulton, where he served as a Chaplain for the State of Missouri Department of Mental Health. In 1996, he retired from state service and moved to Columbia, where he has lived until his death. In 2005, Rev. Mosby was inducted into The Belton High School Hall of Fame. Rev. Mosby frequently said, "I have fulfilled all of my goals in life, God has been good to me, and for that I am forever grateful." Bill is survived by his wife, JoAnn; two sons, David L. Mosby and wife Dottie of Columbia, and Douglas L. Mosby and wife Karla of St. Louis; six grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; two sisters, Helen Graham and Frances Mosby, Belton. Visitation will be 10:00 a.m., followed by a funeral service at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, October 7, 2010, at McGilley & George Funeral Home, 611 Chestnut Belton, Mo. Interment will follow the service in the Belton Cemetery. Memorials in his honor may be made to Campus Crusade for Christ, 100 Lake Heart Drive, Orlando, FL 32832.
