Opal Johnston

Opal F. Johnston, 89, of Springfield, Mo., passed away Wednesday, September 29, 2010, at Maranatha Village. Opal was born December 26, 1920, in Sedalia, Mo., to Turner and Elsie Barnhart. She married C. R. "Dick" Johnston on September 4, 1941, and he preceded her in death. Opal was a member of the Fair Grove Methodist Quilters and enjoyed traveling and family. She was a member of the Order of White Shrine of Jerusalem. Opal was a graduate of the University of Missouri with a BS in Elementary Education. Opal is survived by daughters, Jane Huff and her husband Howard, Karren Beason and husband Tom; a son, Don Johnston and wife Elena; grandchildren, Maria and Alex Johnston, Christopher Kelly and Lemmuel Beason; great-grandchildren, Addison Kay Johnston, Benjamin Beason, Ethan Beason. In addition to her husband, Opal was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Charles Barnhart; a son, Charles Johnston; and granddaughter, Susan Creed. A graveside memorial will be held Sunday, October 10, 2010, at 11:00 am., at the Paradise Cemetery, Jasper, Mo. Family has requested memorial donations be made in Opal's name to the Fair Grove Methodist Church, 83 E. Hickory St., Fair Grove, MO 65648 or the C. R. Johnston-Farm Bureau Scholarship, made payable to the University of Missouri, CAFNR Office of Advancement, 2-4 Agriculture Building, Columbia, MO 65211.
