Thelma Hartley

Thelma L. Hartley, age 101, of Jefferson City, passed away Saturday, March 6, 2010, at Summit Villa, Holt Summit, Mo. Thelma was born March 17, 1908, at Bunceton, Mo., the daughter of Herman A. and Mayne (Smith) Langkop. She was married on December 26, 1932, in Lawrence, Kan., to Clarence E. Hartley, who passed away on December 24, 1968. Mrs. Hartley was a long time teacher and principal, teaching at Moreau Heights in Jefferson City and retiring as principal of the former Cedar City Elementary School after 35 years in the classroom. A 1925 graduate of Jefferson City High School, she attended Christian, now Columbia College at Columbia, Central Missouri University at Warrensburg, the University of Colorado at Boulder, and earned a degree in Education at Lincoln University. She did graduate work in American Studies on a Coe Fellowship at Abilene Christian College in Abilene, Texas. She was a member of the Unity Church, where she served on the Board of Directors and Finance Committee for a number of years. She was active in PTA and Girl Scout work at Moreau Heights and West Schools. She was also a member of the Cole County Historical Society, a charter member of the Cole County Genealogical Society, member of the Missouri State Teachers Association, Northwest Missouri Principals Association, Cole County Retired Teachers Association and the American Association of University Women. Mrs. Hartley was preceded in death by a son, Jay Ken Hartley on January 10, 1996; and two infant sons in 1936 and 1946. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Eugene Langkop of Dallas, Texas in 1998 and Earl M. Langkop of Jefferson City in 1977; and her sister, Dorothy Goff of Jefferson City in 2007. Survivors include a son: James L. Hartley (Linda), Jefferson City; a daughter: Jane L. Frost of Prairie Village, Kan.; four grandsons: Mitchell (Charlette), Brian (Lindsay), Ross (Debbie) Hartley, all of Jefferson City, and Duke Willis of Kansas City; two granddaughters: Cathy Edwards (Ted) of Kansas City, and Carla Schinderling (Jon) of Quincy, Ill.; and six great-grandchildren: Claire, Britni, Ava, Caleb, Madelyn, and Bailey Jay. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Friends will be received from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. with funeral at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 12, 2010, at the Houser-Millard Funeral Home.
