The Reverend Charles R. Crum, age 74 years, of Holts Summit, Mo., died Monday, January 25, 2010, at the Capital Region Medical Center. Charles was born April 8, 1935, in Coffeyville, Kan., the son of Herthal W. and Louise Scoville-Crum. He was married on May 22, 1954 in Wichita, Kan., to Reta C. Cole. A resident of the central Missouri area for the past 15 years, Charles graduated from Field Kindley High School in Coffeyville, Kan. He attended Wichita State University and graduated from the United States Naval School of Music in 1956. He also graduated from Mid-Western Seminary in 1983. Charles served as military musician in the United States Navy for seven years. He was in the congressional approved United States Coast Guard Band retiring July 31, 1975. Charles served as pastor and music minister at churches in Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Maine, Vermont, Illinois, Indiana, Oklahoma, and Kansas. He served as the minister at Cedar Grove Baptist Church in Holts Summit for 10 years prior to his retirement on December 31, 2005. He was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church. Charles was an accomplished musician playing the trombone with several bands. Survivors include: his wife, Reta Crum; two sons, Shawn R. Crum and his wife Jennie of Jefferson City, Mo. and Shane K. Crum and his wife Sherree of Hickory Hill, Mo.; one daughter, Lori C. Johnston and her husband Robert of Irving, Texas; six grandchildren, Mark Zbinden and his wife Tina, Caleb Johnston, Cara Johnston, Colin Johnston and his wife Jordan, Jason Crum and his wife Lyndsay, and Jesse Crum and his wife Kendra; one great-grandchild and three step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, January 28, 2010, at the Immanuel Baptist Church with the Reverend John Dowdy officiating. Visitation will be at Freeman Mortuary from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. Wednesday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Immanuel Baptist Church Music Fund or the Cedar Grove Baptist Church Building Fund.
