Harriett Robinson

Harriett Mae Hemmingway Robinson, 92, of Jefferson City, died Saturday, February 6, 2010, at Oak Tree Villas. Harriett was born September 10, 1917, in Jefferson City to Mae Gertrude and John Hemingway. Mrs. Robinson attended the Lincoln University nursery, elementary, high school and college. Due to the depression she was unable to finish college. She worked various jobs - domestic, stock person, sales clerk and grocery store clerk, before finally getting her "dream job" as Archivist and Historian for Lincoln University's Inman E. Page Library. She had majored in English and minored in Literature in college. She was exhibited twice at the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, D.C. She did private research for companies and individuals, and helped many students on and off campus before and after her retirement. After her official retirement she volunteered at the library three days a week for some years. Survivors include her daughter, Ms. Charlotte Robinson; cousins, Elizabeth Lawson, Mr. and Mrs. Earl and Sarah Tyrus and family; sister-in-law, Mrs. Francis Johhson; niece, Ms. Cheryl Anderson; nephews, Patrick and Lawrance Harris, John Sydney Woods, Harry and Kenneth Johnson, Kenneth Robinson; great niece, Mrs. Donna Stroud; numerous great nieces and nephews, cousins and a special friend and helper, Mrs. Yevonne Mack. She was preceded in death by her parents; spouse, Charles; son, Charles; siblings, Margaret Harris and John Hemmingway; nieces and nephews, Delores and Donald Gilmore, Linda and Charles Anderson; aunts and uncles, Wallace and Sade Lawson, John and Mable Tyrus, Sarah and Edward Brown, Leona Lawson; cousins, Wallace, Rosa and Ruth Lawson, Lucille Smith; in-laws, Verna and Charles Robinson Sr., Charles and Marjorie Anderson, Roy and Lois Woods, Harry Johnson and Paul Robinson. Friends will be received from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 27, 2010, at the Houser-Millard Funeral Home, where funeral services will follow at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow in Longview Cemetery.
