During his lifetime, Roderick was employed by St. Mary's Hospital, the United States Post Office and the Division of Employment Security from which he retired in 1992 after over 40 years of service. Being a man of many talents, Rod designed and built a cabin on the Osage River, assisted and directed the building and remodeling of his families' homes. He upholstered and built furniture, worked on the family farm and was a creative mason and carpenter.
