Janice Schupp

Janice Gail Schupp, 66, of Jefferson City, passed away Monday, August 16, 2010, at St. Mary's Health Center. Jan was born August 5, 1944, in Methuen, Mass., the youngest of four daughters of Richard Francis and Lillian Alice Westwell Fay. She married George O. Schupp in 1986 and he survives. Jan started her pastoral care career in 1983 as a volunteer in St. Mary's pastoral care department and she later became a NACC Certified Hospital Chaplain, and finally the Director of Pastoral Care at St. Mary's which was her final position when she became disabled in 1999. Additionally, she served on the Hospital Ethics Committee as Chair and Region 9 Director for NACC. She was proud of her AARP Legislative Advocacy. As an advocate for AARP, she helped get her long sought Outside the Hospital Do-Not-Resuscitate legislation, MO-OHDNR passed into law. She nicknamed it Jan's Bill. Jan was proud that she was a 34-year survivor of cancer. It was the late effects of her radiation treatments that caused her to take early retirement at the age of 56. It was her active advocacy for her own health care and her strong will to live that allowed her to survive as long as she did. Jan loved to engage in activity and was proud of being a volunteer for the Salvation Army Thrift Store. Jan loved to play on the internet, move furniture and loved her dogs. Survivors include: her husband, George O. Schupp; two daughters, Charlotte Fay McDonough and her husband Michael of Melrose, Mass., and Brenda Fife and husband Matt of St. Martins; two sons, Richard Murray and wife Carla of Jefferson City, and David Murray of Holts Summit; six grandchildren, Timothy McDonough, Kaitlyn McDonough, William Fife, Elizabeth Fife, Samantha Murray and Jada Murray; two sisters, Carolyn Blattenberger of S. Portland, Maine, and Elaine Taylor and husband Geoff of Methuen, Mass.; and lots of beloved nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; baby sister, Francis; grandson, Collin James Murray; brother-in-law, Ronnie Blattenberger; and nephew, Michael Lenihan. A Memorial Mass will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, August 20, 2010, at The Cathedral of St. Joseph in Jefferson City. Memorials may be given to The Alzheimer's Association or The Salvation Army.
