Mrs. Lillian P. "Lillie" Hughes, age 103 years, of Jefferson City, Mo., died Thursday, August 12, 2010, at the Villa Marie Nursing Center. Lillie was born August 2, 1907, in Cedar City, Mo., the daughter of Jacob W. and Carrie Griffin Steinmetz. She was married on May 2, 1925, in Cedar City, Mo., to J. Virgil Hughes, who preceded her in death on December 10, 1987. A lifelong resident of the Jefferson City area, Lillie attended Cedar City School. A homemaker, she had been employed with the Tweedie Footwear Factory for several years. She was a member of the Shiloh United Methodist Church and the Auxiliary of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen. Survivors include: one son, Norris Hughes of Jefferson City, Mo.; one daughter, Velma Shelnutt and her husband Bill of Jefferson City, Mo.; one daughter-in-law, Norma Hughes of Jefferson City, Mo.; 10 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, eight great-great-grandchildren, six step-great-grandchildren, and two step-great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, Richard "Dick" Hughes on July 8, 1998; and three sisters, Merle Bugbee, Mabel Cardwell, and Lottie Baker. Visitation will be at Freeman Mortuary from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m. Saturday. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, August 14, 2010, in the Freeman Chapel with the Reverend David Hartsfield officiating. Interment will be at Riverview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Shiloh United Methodist Church or the charity of their choice.
