James R. Spradling, 74, lifetime resident of Carthage, passed away Monday, August 09, 2010, in McCune-Brooks Regional Hospital, Carthage. James R. Spradling was born September 28, 1935, in Carthage, the son of Harry Ambrose Spradling and Sarah Helen (Montgomery) Spradling. He was a graduate of Carthage High School, Class of 1953, Westminster College, 1953-1954, Southern Methodist University, 1953- 1953, University of Missouri, A.B.-1957, J.D.n1961, Pittsburg State University, M.S.n1972. While in college he pledged to the Beta Theta Pi, Phi Delta Phi, Legal Fraternity and Pi Sigma Alpha, Honorary Political Science Fraternity. He married Sandra Shoults on June 4, 1960, in Carthage, she survives. Jim started his law practice in Oklahoma, moving to Carthage where he joined the Frank Birkhead Law Firm, later opening his own law firm at 320 Grant St., Carthage. He was a member of the Jasper County Bar Association, Missouri Bar Association, Oklahoma Bar Association, American Bar Association and Grace Episcopal Church, Carthage. Mr. Spradling was a municipal judge in Carthage, President of the Carthage Rotary Club, the Carthage Board of Public Works, the Carthage YMCA, Jasper County Association for Social Services, Inc., Chairman of the Carthage Republican Party, Captain in the U.S. Army Reserves, President of the Carthage Park Board, he served on the Executive Board, National Association of Tax Administrators and the Executive Board of the Multi State Tax Commission, was the Missouri Director of Revenue, 1973-1976, President of the Jasper County Missouri Bar and the Missouri Southern Foundation, was a director on the board of Citizens Bank of Carl Junction and Senior Warden at Grace Episcopal Church. He received the Outstanding Educator of America Award in 1971 and for his many years of giving to the City of Carthage, he was named Citizen of the Year in 2003. Additional survivors include: a daughter, Elizabeth (Doug) Simmons of Carthage; a son, James Shannon (Misty) Spradling of Overland Park, Kan.; a sister, Ida Ruth Locarni of Carthage; five grandchildren, William S. Spradling, Sarah Grace Spradling, A. Paul Matteo, James D. Simmons and Thomas M. Simmons. Jim was preceded in death by: his parents; one sister, Helen Spradling Boylan; and one brother, Harry M. Spradling. Visitation will be held today from 5:30 n 7:30 p.m., at Knell Mortuary, Carthage. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, August 12, at Grace Episcopal Church, Carthage.
