Joann Hare

Mrs. Joann Bell Hare, 64, of Atlanta, Ga., passed away Sunday, April 25, 2010, in Atlanta after a long battle with cancer. Mrs. Hare was born on September 9, 1945, in Kansas City, Mo., the daughter of Alexander Graham Sr. and Carrie Belle Bell. Her mother preceded her in death. Her father survives in Fulton, Mo. She was united in marriage in 1968, in Chicago, Ill., to James Hare, who survives her. Joann was educated in the Jefferson City School district. She began her college education at Lincoln University by earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology in 1968. Joann, from an early age, strongly believed in community service. She was a Brownie Girl Scout and Candy Striper at Charles E. Still Hospital in Jefferson City. Joann was an active member of Second Baptist Church, Jefferson City. She was active in choir and performed with a group from the church in presenting pageants in various cities in Missouri. Joann began her career at Lincoln University with the Work Study Program. Joann worked for over 20 years, retiring as a Federal Juvenile Probation Officer for the Washington D.C. Court System. Joann took her work seriously. One day, Joann, upon entering a shopping center in D.C. was cheerfully greeted by a few of her "juvenile clients" who were lounging out front. She advised them stating, "You see that car over there? When I come back, I want it to still be sitting there on all four tires and hubcaps." While in Washington D.C., Joann attended Metropolitan Baptist Church, Dr. H. Beecher Hicks Jr., Senior Pastor. Joann was a member of Delta Sigma Theta, Inc. Joann loved life and service to her fellow man. Her hobbies include reading. Joann departs this life leaving to mourn her passing: her husband; her father; two brothers, Alexander Graham (Patricia) Bell Jr., Chesapeake, Va., and Joseph Allen (Patricia) Bell, Indianapolis, Ind.; one sister, Ruth Elaine Arther, Atlanta, Ga.; one step-brother, Michael B. (Peggy) Pemberton; a cousin, Ruby (Ivy) Smith, St. Louis, Mo.; two nieces, Donna Bell, Waldorf, Md. and Kiata (Curtis) Tolbert, Atlanta, Ga.; four nephews, Kifaru Arther, Atlanta, Ga., Alexander Graham Bell, III, Gulf Port, Miss., Daniel Bell, Austin, Texas and Isaac Bell, Chesapeake, Va.; one step-nephew, Brandon Pemberton; two step-nieces, Candace Pemberton and Shauna Terry; and many other loving relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her mother, Carrie Belle Bell, and her step-mother, Ruby Jane Pemberton Bell. Funeral services will be 2 p.m., Saturday, May 1, 2010, at Dulle-Trimble Funeral Home with Rev. Cornell Sudduth and Alexander Bell Jr. officiating. A Delta Sorority Service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Longview Cemetery.
