Girls Tennis: Helias placed third at Liberty Tournament

LIBERTY, Mo. - The Helias Lady Crusaders went 2-1 on Saturday to take third place in the Liberty Tournament.

Helias opened with an 8-1 win against Holt. The Lady Crusaders swept all three doubles matches, as Catherine Conley and Jessica Cowley won 8-3, Martina Lorang and Ellen Gallaher won 8-2 and Sommer Kolb and Sage Bentlage won 8-6.

Getting singles wins for the Lady Crusaders were Lorang (8-6), Cowley (8-0), Gallaher (8-4), Mya Bremer (8-4) and Kolb (8-5). Conley dropped an 0-8 decision.

In the semifinals, Liberty defeated Helias 9-0. The pairings of Conley and Lorang, Cowley and Bremer and Gallaher and Carley Drinkard each lost 2-8 in doubles play.

Losing in singles were Lorang (1-8), Cowley (0-8), Gallaher (5-8), Bremer (5-8), Kolb (1-8) and Drinkard (2-8).

Liberty would go on to with the tournament title, beating Kickapoo in the finals.

In the third-place match, Helias defeated Olathe (Kan.) Northwest 5-4.

In doubles, Cowley and Bremer won 8-4, while Conley and Lorang lost 5-8 and Gallaher and Drinkard dropped a 6-8 decision.

Helias won four singles matches, getting victories from Conley (8-3), Cowley (8-6), Bremer (8-4) and Kolb (8-0). Lorang and Gallaher each lost 6-8.

Helias (5-3) plays Monday at Moberly.
