Nurski advances at Missouri Amateur

CAPE GIRARDEAU - Defending champion Brad Nurski survived a difficult match Friday in the round of 16 to remain alive in the Missouri Amateur.

The top-seeded Nurski, from St. Joseph, went 19 holes to post a win against 17th-seeded Chris Martin of Rolla. Nurski was 2-up with four holes to play before Martin rallied to send the match to extra holes at Dalhousie Golf Club.

Nurski will face 25th-seeded Brevin Giebler of Cape Girardeau in this morning's quarterfinals. The other quarterfinal matches will include: No. 20 Brad Carpenter of Washington against No. 28 Randy Aheran of St. Louis; No. 47 Chris Kovach of St. Louis against No. 10 Chad Niezing of Manchester; and No. 14 Joseph Williams of St. Louis against No. 22 Brooks Jungbluth of St. Joseph.

Jack Rundle, the only local golfer to advance from stroke play to match play, was eliminated 5-and-4 by Kovach in the round of 32 on Friday.

The quarterfinal and semifinal matches will be played today, with the 36-hole final slated for Sunday.
