Franks shoots 79 at Spyglass

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. - Kory Franks opened play Monday in the U.S. Amateur Championship with a 7-over 79 at Spyglass Hill Golf Course.

Franks, a Missouri State golfer and a graduate of Blair Oaks High School, totaled two birdies, five bogeys and two double bogeys in his opening round. He is in a multi-player tie for 236th.

One of Franks' double bogeys came on his first hole, the par-4 10th. The other came on the par-5 14th to put him 5 over after five holes, but he birdied the par-3 15th and the par-4 17tth to make the turn with a 3-over 39.

But that momentum didn't carry over to his second nine as he had four bogeys and five pars to shoot a 40.

Also playing in Franks' group were Brandon Einstein, who shot a 78, and Nick Carlson, who finished with an 81.

Skip Berkmeyer of St. Louis is among the golfers tied for 203rd at 6-over after shooting a 77 at Pebble Beach Golf Links.

Daniel Hiller of Australia and Trevor Phillips of the United States are tied for the first-round lead at 4-under.

Stroke play for the U.S. Amateur concludes today. Franks tees off at 4:30 p.m. CDT on hole No. 1 at Pebble Beach.

The field of 312 golfers will be narrowed following today's competition. Only the top 64 golfers will advance to Wednesday's match play competition.
