LEXINGTON, Ky. — The Missouri women's basketball team nearly completed a double-digit point comeback upset at No. 24 Kentucky, but fell just short in a 64-62 loss Thursday night in Southeastern Conference action.
Missouri led 15-8 after one quarter, but the Wildcats used a 17-0 run to lead the Tigers 34-24 at halftime.
Kentucky led by as much as 16 in the second quarter and outscored Missouri 26-6 in the frame. Missouri narrowed the deficit to 51-40 at the end of the third quarter.
Sophomore forward Sophie Cunningham made a pair of free throws, stole and in-bounds pass, then passed the ball to senior guard Sierra Michaelis for a 3-point basket that brought the score to 60-56 with 1:14 left.
Missouri was down 63-60 with 7.8 seconds left in the game, but Kentucky (10-5, 1-1 SEC) held on for the win.
Michaelis had 22 points and was 8-of-18 on field goals and 4-of-12 from 3, while adding seven rebounds.
Cunningham had 16 points on 6-of-12 shooting, five rebounds and two assists. Sophomore forward Cierra Porter had seven points and 10 rebounds.
Missouri (11-5, 1-1 SEC) hosts Alabama (12-2, 0-1 SEC) at 2 p.m. Sunday.
