Helias to finish with one medalist at state wrestling

COLUMBIA - Friday came to an abrupt end for the Helias Crusaders at the Class 3 state wrestling tournament.

Evan Winder of Helias was set to to meet Brayden Bradley of Belton in the semifinals at 106 pounds Friday night at Mizzou Arena.

But just seconds into the match, Winder was injured after a collision on the mat with Bradley and was unable to continue and lost by injury default.

Winder (46-7) is scheduled to wrestle today in the fourth-round wrestlebacks, as well as either the third- or fifth-place match.

Winder finished sixth as a freshman at 106 last year and would take the same place again this season if he is forced to default out of today's matches.

Action will begin at 10 a.m. The third- and fifth-place matches should begin around noon. The medal ceremony will be held during the finals, which begin at 4:30 p.m. today.

Winder advanced to the semifinal with a win by fall against Fedrick Johnson of Hazelwood East on Friday afternoon.

Johnson took the lead on a takedown with 1:33 left before Winder quickly got a reversal and the pin.

Winder will be Helias' lone medalist.

After winning his first-round match Thursday, Jackson Careaga of the Crusaders dropped his quarterfinal match and second-round wrestleback to be eliminated.

In the quarterfinals, Careaga dropped a 15-13 decision in overtime to Calvin Obermark of Washington.

Obermark led 5-0 early before Careaga cut the deficit to 7-4 heading into the second period. Careaga then outscored Obermark 7-4 in the second to tie it at 11. Both scored two points in the third period before Obermark got a takedown nine seconds into overtime.

Careaga then fell 6-3 to Holden Hughes of Carl Junction in the wrestleback. Hughes led 5-0 after the first period.

Careaga ends his season at 37-17.

Nick Gaines of Helias split his wrestleback matches Friday.

The senior won by fall against Tyler Stults of Winnetonka in the second round. Gaines led 1-0 after two periods, then picked up two sets of back points before scoring the win by fall in 4:03.

Gaines then lost 4-2 in overtime to Austin Denson of Fort Zumwalt South in the third round. Denson had a pair of escapes sandwiched around a takedown by Gaines in the second period to account for the lone points of the match in regulation. Denson then got the winning takedown :13 into overtime.

Gaines finishes his season at 38-12.
