Mustangs off to perfect start at state

COLUMBIA - The first day of the Class 2 state wrestling tournament could not have gone better for the Eldon Mustangs.

The Mustangs were a perfect 5-for-5 in the opening round Thursday at Mizzou Arena.

Picking up wins for Eldon were:

Isaiah Simmons, a sophomore, by fall at 113 pounds.

Trenton Dillon, a junior, by fall at 160.

Dawson Brandt, a sophomore, by technical fall at 170.

Bobby Harkness, a senior, by a 3-1 decision at 182.

and Trenton Kidwell, a senior, by decision at 195.

The five advance to today's quarterfinals, slated to begin at 10 a.m.

The School of the Osage Indians entered the Class 2 tournament with three qualifiers and all remain alive after Thursday.

Austin Magnuson, a junior, won by fall at 145 for the Indians in the opening round. Ian Schaumburg, a senior, also won by fall at 285 for Osage.

Magnuson and Schaumburg will wrestle in today's quarterfinals, which begin at 10 a.m.

Hayden Carlson, a junior at 126, finished 1-1 on Thursday. Carlson lost his first-round match by a 5-0 decision before winning by fall in the first round of wrestlebacks. He will be in action in the second round of wrestlebacks today.

The Versailles Tigers have six of their seven qualifiers still alive in the Class 1 tournament.

Three Tigers won their first-round matches by fall - Michael Trotter at 170, Willie Schotte at 182 and Jacob Aeschbacher at 220.

Those three will wrestle in the quarterfinals, which start at 10 a.m. today.

Going 1-1 on Thursday and still alive in the tournament are Kooper Wilson at 120, Konner Shewmaker at 126 and Ayden Easton at 285. The trio will be in the second round of wrestlebacks today.

Zach Reed at 113 went 0-2 on Thursday for the Tigers.

Robert Gutierrez, a senior from Tipton, went 1-1 to stay alive in the Class 1 tournament.

Gutierrez lost a 7-6 decision in his first-round match before winning 7-1 in the wrestlebacks later Thursday. He will be in the second round of wrestlebacks today.

Kagan Froning of Fatima was eliminated from the tournament after going 0-2 Thursday.

The junior lost his first-round and his first-round wrestleback matches by fall.
