Post 5 Juniors go 4-0, win Zone 1 Tournament

KIRKSVILLE - The Jefferson City American Legion Post 5 Juniors continued their domination Saturday afternoon.

Post 5 scored 10 runs in the bottom of the third inning, cruising to a 15-5 win in five innings against Washington Post 218 to win the Zone 1 Tournament.

Jefferson City briefly trailed in the game in the third inning. Washington scored four runs in the top half to take a 5-3 lead.

That lead was gone in an instant, as Post 5 sent 15 batters to the plate in the bottom half.

Jaden Hoskins' two-run single - Jefferson City's third straight hit to start the inning - scored Nolan Heckemeyer and Alex Grellner to tie the game at 5. Landon Plochberger gave his team the lead for good, coming to the plate with the bases loaded an hitting a two-run single.

Grellner and Hoskins collected their second hits of the inning in their next plate appearances. Grellner hit a two-run single, while Hoskins followed with another single against Washington's third pitcher of the inning.

In the bottom of the fourth, Heckemeyer hit a two-out triple, scoring Plochberger. Grellner gave Post 5 a 10-run lead by hitting an RBI single, scoring Heckemeyer.

Cade Stockman pitched all five innings in the win. He allowed five runs on eight hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

Post 5's Nos. 2-4 hitters combined to hit 7-for-9 with seven RBI. Grellner finished 3-for-3 with two singles, one double and three RBI, while Heckemeyer and Hoskins each had two hits and two RBI.

Landry Bailey had a bases-clearing single in the bottom of the first and drove in a team-high four runs. Plochberger also ended the game with two singles and two RBI.

Post 5 (19-0) advances to the Missouri AA State Tournament, which will be held July 18-20 at Washington.
