Chiefs bring back Allen for depth

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Chiefs waived safety Leon McQuay and signed offensive lineman Jeff Allen on Tuesday, giving them some additional depth up front after recent injuries to Laurent Duvernay-Tardif and Mitch Morse.

Duvernay-Tardif, the starter at right guard, broke a bone in his left leg two weeks ago and landed on injured reserve. Morse sustained a concussion in Sunday night's loss in New England, creating a void at center heading into this week's game against Cincinnati.

Jordan Devey is likely to start at center and Andrew Wylie at right guard.

The 28-year-old Allen was a second-round pick of the Chiefs in the 2012 draft, and spent four solid seasons in Kansas City. He signed a four-year deal with Houston as a free agent in 2016, but was released in mid-July with an injury settlement after dealing with a concussion and other injuries.

The Raiders released former Chiefs linebacker Derrick Johnson on Tuesday and promoted Jason Cabinda from the practice squad to take his place.

The Raiders signed Johnson in May to be the starting middle linebacker and was named team captain just prior to the season. But second-year player Marquel Lee has earned the bulk of the playing time at the position and the Raiders decided to go in a different direction heading into the bye week this week.

Johnson appeared in six games this season and recorded 17 tackles. His playing time had decreased through the past three games.

Johnson, 35, is the Chiefs' career tackles leader and was second on the team last season with 71 stops. He's a four-time Pro Bowl linebacker and was named All-Pro in 2011.

When the Chiefs evaluated the position for 2018, they opted to sign Anthony Hitchens, who had been with the Cowboys, to pair with Reggie Ragland at inside linebacker. The three other inside linebackers on the roster are Terrance Smith, Dorian O'Daniel and Ben Niemann.
