Friday's MLB Capsules

Games played on May 15, 2015

CINCINNATI (AP) - Brandon Belt hit a three-run homer, and Buster Posey added a two-run shot off Jason Marquis on Friday night, leading the San Francisco Giants to a 10-2 victory over the Cincinnati Reds in a game played uninterrupted while an outfield smokestack burned for an inning.

One of the two riverboat smokestacks that shoot off celebratory flames and fireworks caught fire in the top of the sixth because of a malfunctioning propane valve. Flames shot from the top of the smokestack and spewed dark smoke until firefighters extended a ladder from outside the ballpark and sprayed it.

Belt and Posey homered off Marquis (3-3), who lasted a season-low three innings while allowing a season-high six runs. Belt also had an RBI double among his three hits and scored three times.

Madison Bumgarner (4-2) gave up eight hits in seven innings, including solo homers by Zack Cozart and Billy Hamilton.

DODGERS 6, ROCKIES 4

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Clayton Kershaw earned his 100th career victory on his fifth attempt and Los Angeles hung on for a victory over Colorado.

Dodgers closer Kenley Jansen, reinstated from the disabled list after recovering from surgery on his left foot in February, struck out four in the eighth inning on 14 pitches. The first one, Carlos Gonzalez, reached base on a passed ball by Yasmani Grandal.

Jansen was the first big leaguer to accomplish the feat since Arizona's Oliver Perez last Sept. 20 at Colorado. And it couldn't have come at a better time, after the Rockies scored four runs in the seventh against relievers Paco Rodriguez and Yimi Garcia.

Rookie Adam Liberatore gave up a pair of one-out singles in the ninth before ex-Rockies right-hander Juan Nicasio got the final two outs for his first save in five big league seasons.

TIGERS 10, CARDINALS 4

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Miguel Cabrera ended a season-long slump in night games with a two-run homer and two singles and Detroit also got homers from Yoenis Cespedes and J.D. Martinez in a victory over St. Louis.

Cabrera entered batting just .158 with no homers and one RBI at night - he's hit .471 with eight homers and 25 RBIs in day games. Manager Brad Ausmus called those numbers an "anomaly" before the game.

Cabrera hit his 399th career homer and third in two games in the seventh inning off Mitch Harris, tying Andres Galarraga for most by a Venezuelan-born player, and Martinez followed with his eighth homer to make it 5-0.

Shane Greene (4-2) allowed five hits in five scoreless innings before being removed due to numbness in his pitching arm.

CUBS 11, PIRATES 10, 12 INNINGS

CHICAGO (AP) - Right fielder Gregory Polanco tripped and fell while trying to catch an easy fly and the ball dropped for an RBI single in the 12th inning that sent Chicago to a startling win over Pittsburgh.

The Cubs won their fifth straight game, matching their longest string since last June.

Chicago loaded the bases with one out in the 12th against Radhames Liz (0-1) and Matt Szczur lifted a routine fly to shallow right field, not likely to score the winning run.

Polanco came running in with plenty of time to make the catch, then slipped and stumbled to the ground. He reached up with his bare left hand trying to make a play, but had no chance and never touched the ball as Starlin Castro ran home.

In the exact same situation in the 10th - bases loaded, one out - Polanco caught a deeper fly by Szczur and threw out Castro at the plate to end the inning.

ROYALS 12, YANKEES 1

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Lorenzo Cain had a career-high five RBIs, Kendrys Morales drove in three more runs and Kansas City routed New York.

The Royals scored six times in the sixth inning while knocking Yankees starter Michael Pineda from the game, then cruised the rest of the way to open a three-game set between division leaders by dealing New York its season-high fourth consecutive loss.

Chris Young (3-0) allowed just four hits and two walks over 5 2-3 innings, making another strong case for a permanent spot in the starting rotation. The 6-foot-10 veteran made his third spot start in place of Jason Vargas, who is on the disabled list with a hip flexor injury.

Pineda (5-1), coming off a masterful 16-strikeout performance against Baltimore, only struck out one while matching a career worst with 10 hits.

ASTROS 8, BLUE JAYS 4

HOUSTON (AP) - Dallas Keuchel remained unbeaten as Houston backed him with plenty of home run support in a win over Toronto.

Jose Altuve hit a three-run homer and George Springer and Luis Valbuena also connected as the Astros won their third in a row.

Keuchel (5-0) won his seventh straight decision overall. He gave up four runs and eight hits while striking out five in six innings.

Altuve and Springer homered off R.A. Dickey (1-5) as Houston built a 7-1 lead after four innings. After recently losing six of eight, the Astros have gotten back to the outpouring of offense that put them into the AL West lead.

MARINERS 2, RED SOX 1

SEATTLE (AP) - Nelson Cruz's RBI single with two outs in the ninth inning drove in Brad Miller from second base to give Seattle a victory over Boston.

Miller started it with a one-out single off Tommy Layne (0-1), and he advanced on Robinson Cano's groundout. Junichi Tazawa took over on the mound and Cruz hit his 3-2 pitch into the left-center gap for the victory.

Cruz has had at least one hit in each of his last eight games, hitting .467 (14 of 30) during that stretch.

Tom Wilhelmsen (1-0) tossed two shutout innings for the victory.

Clay Buchholz worked the first eight innings for the Red Sox with no walks and a season-high 11 strikeouts, one shy of his career high. He showed no signs of a left ankle injury sustained Sunday against Toronto.

BREWERS 7, METS 0

NEW YORK (AP) - Ryan Braun homered twice and made a marvelous catch, leading Kyle Lohse and Milwaukee to a victory over slumping New York.

Lohse (3-4) allowed two harmless hits in eight crisp innings. Gerardo Parra also homered and hit an RBI double for the last-place Brewers, who battered Bartolo Colon (6-2) to win their first road game under new manager Craig Counsell.

Aramis Ramirez had three hits in his return to the lineup, including an RBI double that put Milwaukee in front.

Lohse struck out eight, walked one and used the large dimensions in center field to his advantage. Michael Blazek completed a three-hitter that took only 2 hours, 18 minutes.

Back home after getting swept by the Chicago Cubs in four games at Wrigley Field, the NL East-leading Mets dropped their season-worst fifth straight.

TWINS 3, RAYS 2

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Danny Santana's triple keyed a late two-run rally, and Phil Hughes pitched seven strong innings to lead Minnesota to a victory over Tampa Bay.

Hughes (3-4) gave up two runs and five hits to win his third straight start. Glen Perkins pitched a scoreless ninth for his 12th save in as many opportunities.

Rays starter Jake Odorizzi (3-3) cruised into the seventh inning with a 2-1 lead, but in the blink of an eye his night was over. Aaron Hicks led off with a single to left, and Santana followed by hooking a ball into the right-field corner for a triple that tied the game. Brian Dozier then put the Twins on top 3-2 with a sacrifice fly.

David DeJesus hit a home run with two outs in the second to put the Rays on top 1-0. But Dozier tied it with a homer leading off the third.

ANGELS 3, ORIOLES 1

BALTIMORE (AP) - Jered Weaver allowed one run and three hits while pitching into the eighth inning, leading Los Angeles past Baltimore.

Albert Pujols hit his sixth home run for Los Angeles, which has won seven of its past nine, including a season-high four straight. Weaver let his defense do most of the work against the Orioles' lineup and struck out three with just one walk.

Weaver (2-4) was coming off a shutout against the Astros and held the Orioles scoreless before J.J. Hardy led off the eighth with a homer.

Wei-Yin Chen (1-2) had an effective outing for Baltimore overshadowed by Weaver. He allowed two runs on seven hits and tied a season high with seven strikeouts with a walk over seven innings. It was the fifth time this season that Chen allowed two runs or fewer and not earned a victory.

NATIONALS 10, PADRES 0

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Bryce Harper hit his NL-leading 13th homer and Jordan Zimmermann and A.J. Cole combined on a seven-hitter to lead Washington to a victory against San Diego.

Zimmermann (3-2) struck out six and allowed six singles in six innings to win his fourth straight start. He improved to 3-1 in five starts at Petco Park. Zimmermann allowed three straight singles opening the fifth before retiring the side to preserve the shutout.

Cole, recalled earlier from Triple-A Syracuse, allowed one single in three innings of relief to earn his first save.

The Nationals had a season-high 16 hits in winning for the 13th time in 17 games.

The Padres were shut out for the fourth time in 11 games and the sixth time this season.

BRAVES 5, MARLINS 3

MIAMI (AP) - Todd Cunningham had three hits in his first big league start, including a tiebreaking single in the eighth inning, and Atlanta overcame two solo home runs by Giancarlo Stanton to beat Miami.

Major league batting leader Dee Gordon went 3 for 5 for Miami, hiking his average to .433. It was his 11th game with three or more hits.

Stanton's second homer was a tape-measure shot that tied it in the seventh. He has 10 homers and a major league-high 35 RBIs.

The score was 3-all when Nick Markakis doubled in the eighth off Mike Dunn (0-2), and he scored on Cunningham's single against Bryan Morris. Cunningham, who was called up before the game from Triple-A, also scored twice.

PHILLIES 4, DIAMONDBACKS 3

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Pinch-hitter Jeff Francoeur delivered a go-ahead single in the seventh inning to help Philadelphia beat Arizona for its first three-game winning streak this season.

Freddy Galvis hit a tying, two-run single before Francoeur came through. Elvis Araujo (1-0) retired the only batter he faced in relief to earn his first major league win and Luis Garcia tossed two scoreless innings for his first career save.

After Arizona took a 3-1 lead in the seventh, the Phillies rallied in the bottom half. Carlos Ruiz and Cesar Hernandez hit consecutive singles off Daniel Hudson to start the inning. Oliver Perez (1-1) entered and threw a wild pitch to advance the runners, then gave up Galvis' hit.

Enrique Burgos replaced Perez and Francoeur hit a single down the left-field line. He was thrown out trying to stretch it into a double.

INDIANS 8, RANGERS 3

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Nick Swisher had three hits and his first three RBIs of the season, and Cleveland spoiled Adrian Beltre's 400th career home run with a victory over Texas.

Jason Kipnis singled four times and Michael Brantley reached base in all five trips, with two doubles among his three hits. They combined to score five runs.

Ryan Webb (1-0) and four other Cleveland relievers combined for 6 2-3 shutout innings.

Swisher had a tiebreaking two-run single in the fifth off Wandy Rodriguez (1-2). He was playing his ninth game after missing a month recovering from knee surgery last August.

Beltre became the 52nd player with 400 homers by following Prince Fielder's fifth of the season with his fifth as well in the first inning.

WHITE SOX 7, ATHLETICS 6

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Avisail Garcia doubled in two runs to cap a five-run seventh inning and Chicago rallied to beat stumbling Oakland.

Adam LaRoche drove in three runs for the White Sox, winners of seven of 10 - including three straight on the road.

Oakland missed a chance to tie the game when Stephen Vogt was thrown out trying to score on Coco Crisp's two-out double in the ninth. Vogt rounded third and was caught in a rundown before being tagged out by White Sox catcher Geovany Soto.

Scott Carroll (1-1) pitched two innings to pick up the win. Zach Duke got the last four outs for his first save since 2011.

Josh Reddick had three RBIs for Oakland.

Francisco Abad (0-2) allowed a two-run single to LaRoche in the seventh, and LaRoche scored the go-ahead run on Garcia's double off Evan Scribner.
