Gilmore falls short in high jump, McMillan takes fifth in heptathlon

EUGENE, Ore. - Andy Gilmore missed on all three of his attempts in the opening height of the men's high jump finals Sunday at the U.S. Olympic Trials.

Gilmore, a native of Ashland and graduate of Southern Boone High School, was unable to place in the finals, failing to clear the opening height of 7 feet, 1 inch.

Erik Kynard won the men's high jump, clearing a final height of 7-6.

Chantae McMillan, a native of Rolla and a U.S. Olympian at the 2012 London Games, finished fifth Sunday in the women's heptathlon. She recorded 6,326 points.

McMillan, 28, won the javelin competition in the heptathlon with a throw of 162-3. McMillan finished in the top 10 in six of the seven events, including a third-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles Saturday with a time of 13.33 seconds.

Only the top three finishers in each track and field event qualified for next month's Rio Games. McMillan was 76 points behind Kendell Williams, who came in third place at the U.S. Olympic Trials.
