Calvary Lutheran softball powers past Hermann with 11-run first inning

HERMANN - The Calvary Lutheran Lady Lions scored 11 runs in the top of the first inning Monday on their way to a 13-9 win against the Hermann Lady Bearcats.

Calvary Lutheran collected 11 of its 17 hits in the first inning. Clare Hart and Laura Moody each had RBI doubles, while Emily Hauck, Kaleigh Kaiser, Hart, Sydney Duenckel and Sam Matthews each had RBI singles in the inning.

Abbie Klatt led the Lady Lions with five RBI, four of which came in the first. She hit a two-run home run in her first at-bat and followed that with a two-run single in her second plate appearance of the evening.

Klatt added a solo home run to lead off the third inning, making the score 12-4.

Matthews also finished with an RBI single in the seventh. She batted 4-for-5 to lead the Lady Lions.

Claire Duenckel went 3-for-4 with two singles and a double, while Hart and Kaiser each had two hits.

Klatt was the winning pitcher for Calvary Lutheran. She pitched four innings of relief and gave up one earned run on four hits, finishing with five strikeouts.

Claire Duenckel pitched the first three innings, allowing three earned runs on five hits with three walks and three strikeouts.

Calvary Lutheran (2-4) plays Thursday at Jamestown.
