Helias soccer rolls past Camdenton

The Helias Crusaders didn't let Friday night carry over into Saturday afternoon.

Coming off a home soccer loss Friday to St. Louis University High, Helias bounced back a little more than 12 hours later to blank the Camdenton Lakers 6-0 at the Crusader Athletic Complex.

"It was a good all-around game for us," Helias coach Jay Hebenheimer said.

Helias fell 5-0 to SLUH on Friday, losing offensive standout Isaac Johnson to a knee injury in the opening minutes on a collision going for the ball.

"Last night was rough on us," Hebenheimer said. "To be without one of our starters because of a red card and then to lose Ike in the first few minutes of the game, you could feel the air come out of the players."

Hebenheimer got the team refocused for Camdenton in his postgame talk Friday.

"I told them that the game didn't matter a hill of beans, (Saturday) was the game that mattered," he said. "It was a game against a district opponent and we had to absolutely be ready to play."

The Crusaders played well on offense from the start Saturday. Helias had two shots go off the crossbar in the first 10 minutes.

"We're getting our opportunities, but I think sometimes we just rip the shot instead of focusing on getting it into the back of the net," Hebenheimer said. "We're peppering goalies, we're peppering goalies, we're peppering a foot on either side of the net.

"We need to make our opportunities count."

The Crusaders made an opportunity count with a little more than 25 minutes remaining in the first half when Zach Paschal scored off an assist by Luke Hynes.

Helias added two goals in the final eight minutes of the half to take a 3-0 lead into intermission.

Alex Tesreau scored the first one, assisted by Jacob Andrews. The second came from Carson Mudd, assisted by Paschal.

Helias finished the half with a 19-5 edge in total shots, including a 15-4 advantage in those on goal.

Kaleb Wilson made it 4-0 less than two minutes into the second half off an assist by Mudd.

Four minutes later, Hynes scored to increase Helias' lead to 5-0. Andrews got his second assist of the game on the goal.

Helias' final goal came with a little more than 28 minutes to play as Hynes scored off an assist by Paschal.

The Crusaders were strong Saturday at finding open teammates on the offensive end.

"We are doing a very good job of releasing the ball, of distributing the ball," Hebenheimer said. "When we do that, we have a lot of guys who can score on this team."

Paschal had an especially good offensive game Saturday.

"He's so good at playing with his back to the goal, he's so strong," Hebenheimer said. "You almost have to foul him to get the ball away from him.

"We're getting goals because Zach is so good at what he does."

Ben Rehagen finished with five saves in getting his first shutout of the season.

"It's big, it's something he can build on for the remainder of the season," Hebenheimer said.

Hebenheimer isn't sure how long Johnson will be out.

"Losing Ike is a big hit, but we're going to win without him until he gets back," Hebenheimer said. "He had an important job today of keeping us up on the sideline and on the field."

Helias (3-5) is back in action Monday at Lincoln Prep in Kansas City. The varsity-only contest will start at 4 p.m.

Helias returns home Thursday to host Fatima.
