The Fatima Lady Comets didn't want a repeat of Monday, when they struck out 15 times while not getting a hit until the seventh inning against Helias.
It only took an inning for Fatima to get rolling Tuesday against the Jefferson City Lady Jays, scoring two runs in the second inning and holding on for a 5-3 victory at Vogel Field.
"I'm very proud of our girls how they bounced back from that," Fatima coach Dana Scheppers said. "I was worried that was going to carry over to tonight. You always play bigger schools to better yourself. These girls came in tonight ready to play, fired up."
Meanwhile, Chayce Gier was keeping the Lady Comets comfortably ahead by retiring the first nine Lady Jays she faced, including striking out the side in the second.
"Chayce was on her game," Scheppers said.
Jefferson City got something going offensively in the fourth when Addison Morgan bunted her way on and rounded the bases on a wide throw to first base to make it 5-1.
Kara Daly and Reece DeSimone gave the Lady Jays two runners in scoring position with singles before two groundouts stranded them.
"She spins it well," Lady Jays coach Zac Miller said of Gier. "We had a hard time squaring her up."
Morgan scored a second time in the sixth after leading off with a single to right field, stealing second base and making it home when Megan Green sent one high and far for a two-run home run over the fence in left-center field.
"She earned it," Scheppers said. "She tagged it."
The Lady Jays gave themselves a chance in the seventh with a leadoff single by Olivia Wallace.
But Gier snagged a short popup and threw to first base for a double play. A groundout ended it.
Morgan had two of the seven hits off Gier with Daly, Green, DeSimone, Avrey Reynolds and Wallace each adding one hit.
"I thought she handled Daly really well," Scheppers said. "She handled Green until the last at-bat."
Green smacked a pair of home runs in last year's 12-2 win at Fatima, including one that plated Daly for the second time after a fourth walk to Jefferson City's 3-hole batter.
"It backfired on me last year so I kind of learned my lesson," Scheppers said. "I had confidence in Chayce."
Daly went 1-for-3 with a strikeout.
Gier went the distance in the win, striking out seven and walking none.
Green pitched into the fourth before Reynolds limited Fatima (2-3) to two hits in four innings of relief.
"She's getting to where that's what we expect from her," Miller said of Reynolds.
Fatima leadoff batter Londyn Stuckenschneider finished 2-for-4 with an RBI single in the second.
Anna Eichholz went 2-for-3 from the No. 8 spot, including a grounder up the middle to score the game's first run.
Morgan Luebbering drove in a run with a grounder to center field in the third before a wild pitch brought home Allyson Havens to make it 4-0.
Gier added to the cushion with a fly ball to center field in the fourth for an RBI single.
"We had some key hits, that's something we have not done all year long," Scheppers said. "Runners in scoring position and bringing home the run, something we've struggled with this year and it's nice to see that coming."
Fatima will host Battle on Thursday while Jefferson City (2-1) heads to the American Legion Post 5 Sports Complex to face Helias.
The JV game will start at 5 p.m. with the varsity following around 6:30 p.m.
