Calvary Lutheran edges Versailles in district softball

VERSAILLES - Sydney Duenckel homered and Abbie Klatt pitched a four-hitter as the Calvary Lutheran Lady Lions defeated the Versailles Lady Tigers 2-1 on Wednesday in the Class 2 District 9 Tournament.

The No. 4 seed Lady Lions scored first when Laura Moody singled to drive in Claire Duenckel, who led off the second inning with a double.

Versailles, the No. 5 seed, tied it in the third after Maris Ollison drew a two-out walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch, stole third base and scored on Keirra O'Rourke's single.

The deciding run was scored in the bottom of the third on Sydney Duenckel's one-out solo home run.

Sydney Duenckel had two of Calvary's four hits, adding a double to the home run.

Klatt earned the win in the pitcher's circle, limiting the Lady Tigers to one unearned run and four hits with three strikeouts and a walk.

Calvary (11-11) will face top-seeded California (18-4) at 5 p.m. today in the semifinals.

No. 2 seed Warsaw (17-4) will face No. 3 seed Russellville (16-7) at 6:30 p.m. in the other semifinal.

The championship game is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday.

Versailles ends its season at 7-17.
