The Helias Crusaders were down in numbers heading into Tuesday night's match against Guadalupe Centers Charter at the Crusader Athletic Complex.

The numbers were against the Crusaders, who dropped an 8-0 decision to the Aztecs.

"We have seven starters hurt," Helias coach Jay Hebenheimer said. "That means three varsity starters on the field and the rest are JV players.

"It's hard not to get frustrated."

The Aztecs got on the board about six minutes in when Luckyboy Tarley found the back of the net. Tarley then made it 2-0 about eight minutes later, scoring on what was an end-to-end run for Guadalupe Centers.

Helias appeared to score with about 11 minutes left in the half, only have the goal disallowed due to an offside call.

The Aztecs then took a 3-0 lead into the intermission when David Portillo scored on a breakaway with a little more than four minutes left on the clock.

"We won't be healthy for a couple of weeks, it's going to be a struggle," Hebenheimer said. "The next guy needs to step up, but the problem is the next guy isn't always ready to play yet at the varsity level."

Hebenheimer was pleased with what he saw Tuesday from freshmen Brendan Callahan and Carter Prenger.

"Both of them are small, but they were out there battling, winning balls," he said. "You never want as a coach to put someone out there in a physical mismatch like that, but those two really battled and played without fear.

"If everyone came out and played like they did, it might look a little different."

Tarley and Portillo took turns scoring goals early in the second half to make it 7-0. The Aztecs won the game by the mercy rule on a goal with 25:42 remaining in the second half.

Guadalupe Centers, ranked No. 7 in Class 2, is now 12-1. Its only loss was a 4-3 decision to Van Horn in the title game of the K.C. Cup.

Helias (5-9-1) is back in action Thursday at Mexico before returning home to face Father Tolton next Tuesday.

There was no JV game Tuesday.
