St. Elizabeth edges NW: Hughesville in Class 1 sectionals

SEDALIA, Mo. - The St. Elizabeth Hornets scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning Monday to rally for a 5-4 victory against Northwest: Hughesville in a Class 1 sectional game.

St. Elizabeth (15-4) will host Wellsville (13-4) in the quarterfinals Wednesday as the Hornets look to return to the Class 1 Final Four after finishing second last season.

St. Elizabeth scored two runs in the first to take an early lead on singles by Coltin Green and Brock Lucas.

That was all the scoring until the sixth, when Northwest plated four runs in the top of the inning to take the lead.

In the bottom of the inning, Carson Kesel cut the Hornets' deficit to 4-3 on an RBI fielder's choice. Hayden Irwin followed with a pinch-hit single that tied the game at 4 before Ross Struemph drove home what proved to the game-winner with a single.

Northwest drew a walk to start the top of the seventh, but that runner was erased by a double play on popped-up bunt. The final out came on a grounder to short.

Brock Lucas was the winner in relief, pitching the final two innings. He allowed two runs on three hits and one walk while striking out three. Aaron Blomberg worked the first five-plus innings, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks. He struck out seven.

This is the second straight season St. Elizabeth has posted a one-run victory against Northwest in the sectional round. The Hornets won last year's meeting 6-5.

Wellsville advanced Monday with a 4-1 win against Concordia.
