Prep Baseball: Fatima 12, Vienna 6

WESTPHALIA - The Fatima Comets scored eight unanswered runs on their way to a 12-6 win against the Vienna Eagles on Thursday.

The Eagles scored the game's first two runs. Logan Agan crossed home plate when Gavin Stricklan reached on a fielder's choice in the first. Timothy Schwartze singled in a run in the second for a 2-0 lead.

Then Fatima brought the power in the bottom half. Gage Bax got the Comets on the board with a solo home run to left field and Ethan Backes made it 4-2 with a three-run homer to center field.

Vienna took the lead back with a three-run fourth inning, but Fatima answered with three runs to lead 7-5.

The Comets widened the margin to seven in the fifth. Gage Cunningham doubled in a run, Wyatt Luebbert singled in a run, Jaden Hoskins drove in two with a double and Josef Keilholz finished of the five-run barrage with a single to center field.

Cunningham led Fatima with three hits. Backes had four RBI and Hoskins drove in three.

Levi Messersmith collected three hits, including two doubles, for the Eagles, who scored the game's final run in the sixth. Agan and McCrae Fuller each had two hits.

Backes earned the win for Fatima, allowing five runs in five innings.

Fatima (10-14) will begin play in the Class 3 District 9 Tournament at 4:30 p.m. Monday in the semifinals at Cuba.

The top-seeded Comets will face either No. 4 seed Steelville or No. 5 seed Dixon.

Vienna (18-7) is the No. 2 seed in Class 2 District 9. The Eagles will play either No. 3 seed Eugene or No. 6 seed Crocker at 6:30 p.m. Monday in the semifinals at Eugene.

Fatima won Thursday's JV game 6-1.

Zach Schwartze had two doubles for Vienna.
