Russellville holds off Vienna in state-ranked baseball clash

RUSSELLVILLE, Mo. - The Russellville Indians got a strong relief appearance from Dawson Koch on Monday.

The junior right-hander pitched the final six innings, leading the Indians to a 4-2 win against the Vienna Eagles.

It was a matchup of two state-ranked teams from Class 2 District 9. Russellville is ranked No. 2 and Vienna is No. 7 in Class 2.

Matt Miller, Russellville's starting pitcher, put his team on top 2-0 in the bottom of the first inning with a two-out, two-run single to right field.

Vienna finished the game with four hits, but two of them left the park. Timothy Schwartze's solo home run to center field to lead off the second inning cut the Eagles' deficit in half at 2-1.

Koch relieved Miller with two on and no outs in that inning, getting three consecutive flyouts to escape the jam.

Austin Roe scored on an error for another Russellville run in the third inning. Trenton Morrow added an insurance run with a sacrifice fly in the fifth, scoring Nick Thompson.

Vienna's other solo homer was hit by Gavin Stricklan with one out in the top of the fifth.

Koch retired seven of the last eight batters he faced, striking out four batters in a row. He earned the win, giving up one run on two hits with two walks and seven strikeouts.

Logan Agan took the loss for Vienna. In four innings, he allowed three runs on four hits, but finished with nine strikeouts and just one walk.

Schwartze led the Eagles at the plate, going 2-for-3 and adding a single in the third.

For the Indians, Miller had two of the team's six hits with a pair of singles.

Russellville (3-1) hosts Fatima on Friday, while Vienna (2-1) hosts St. James on Wednesday.

In Monday's JV game, Russellville defeated Vienna 9-1.
