Helias fishing duo wins tournament

The Helias team of Zach Bondurant and Spencer Mertens captured the state title at the National Youth Fishing Association's championships last Sunday at Table Rock Lake.

Bondurant and Mertens caught fish with a combined weight of 14.21 pounds to best more than 100 teams in the field. For the win, the Crusader duo won the first prize of $3,000 in scholarships.

Beau Bondurant and Carson Brauner of Helias finished 20th with fish totaling 11.33 pounds. Ethan Herigon and Drew Distler of the Crusaders finished 89th at 4.49 pounds.

Cody Wieberg and Gerald Luetkemeyer of St. Elizabeth finished 37th at 10.33 pounds.

In the junior division, the Helias team of Matthew Malmstrom and Mason Geisler finished sixth with a 8.87 pounds.

Zach Holtmeyer and Trey Struemph of St. Elizabeth were 22nd in the junior division at 1.69 pounds.
