The junior varsity dual proceeds Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2019, in advance of the final varsity wrestling dual of the season at Fleming Fieldhouse featuring Jefferson City hosting Rock Bridge.

The Jefferson City Jays had the dual won before it even began.

The Rock Bridge Bruins were open at nine of the 14 weight classes in Tuesday's dual at Fleming Fieldhouse.

"We just told the kids to wrestle hard, and every one of them did," Jays coach Phil Cagle said after his team's 71-6 dual win against Rock Bridge. "Even in the two matches we lost, we lost to quality kids."

The Jays' two losses were close decisions early in the dual.

Garrett Butel lost a 5-4 decision to Evan Diehls at 113 pounds, while Christian Strope dropped an 8-6 decision to Owen Twaddle at 120.

Diehls is Rock Bridge's lone state-ranked wrestler at No. 3 in Class 4. Butel trailed 5-0 late in the second period and nearly rallied late in the third to pull off the upset.

"We'll see him again at districts," Cagle said of Diehls. "You never know what happens later on. We're getting closer every time to this kid."

A pair of freshmen picked up head-to-head wins for the Jays. Michael Friederich won by technical fall in 4:50 against Aydin Rodriguez at 138, while Will Berendzen picked up a first-period pin in 1:22 against Zach Tran at 160.

Cagle said five freshmen were in the lineup Tuesday for the Jays, and three of them wrestled in the five head-to-head matchups.

"They both did a really good job as freshmen," Cagle said of Friederich and Berendzen. " It's going to really help us in the future, and for as young as we are, we've been wrestling most of the season with just two seniors."

Mathias Wieberg won by fall in 2:44 against Drew Nichols at 285.

"It was a nice way to finish the dual," Cagle said. "Mathias had not wrestled this kid, and we didn't know what to expect."

Winning by forfeit for the Jays were Anakin Gray at 106, Hunter Walling at 126, Clayton Hurley at 132, Will Kuster at 145, Sam Rackers at 152, Dawson Prenger at 170, Brant Aulber at 182, Cory Denney at 195 and Isaac Enloe at 220.

Rock Bridge had another wrestler at the dual who was unable to make the certified weight at 220. Cagle inserted Enloe at 220 for the dual and had Brandon Backues face the Rock Bridge wrestler in an exhibition matchup.

Backues ended the night with a win by fall in 1:08.

"Brandon, right now, is wrestling very, very smart," Cagle said. "He won the tournament this past weekend. He's keeping good body position in knowing where he's at, when he needs to score and how he needs to score."

The Jays finish the regular season with a 10-3 record in dual competition.

"Our kids have got a lot of heart, they have a lot of courage and they work tremendously hard," Cagle said. "We're really proud of them. Now we have to get ready for this weekend."

Jefferson City will finish the regular season Saturday at the Seckman Tournament.

Cagle said he was initially going to send his JV team to the tournament, but because the Jays canceled the Capital City Invitational due to winter weather, he added this weekend's tournament to the varsity schedule.

"We'll wrestle this Saturday and then we'll come back and tune our practices up for them to get ready for districts," Cagle said.

The Jays won the JV dual 75-0, winning 10 matches by forfeit.

In the contested matches, Da'Juan Wallace won by fall in 2:44 at 120, Albert Naaman won a 10-7 decision at 132 and Adrian Hendricks III won by fall in :42.
