Wall's last-second shots from stripe lift Eldon boys to win

CLINTON - The Eldon Mustangs almost squandered a double-digit halftime lead, but Landon Wall came to their rescue.

The Eldon senior drew a foul with 0.5 seconds remaining and the Mustangs trailing the Knob Noster Panthers by a point. Wall made the first free throw to tie the game, then hit the second to secure his team a 56-55 first-round win Tuesday in the Class 3 District 10 Tournament.

It was Eldon's first district win since a 70-55 first-round victory against Salem on March 4, 2014, in the Class 4 District 10 Tournament.

Eldon, the No. 4 seed, led 16-13 after one quarter and 32-22 at halftime. Knob Noster, which ended the first half by making a half-court shot at the buzzer, trimmed its deficit to 46-38 after three quarters, then outscored the Mustangs 17-10 in the final eight minutes.

Elijah Rivera scored a team-high 15 points for the Mustangs, while Logan Hall added 14 points. Wall's winning free throws also put him in double figures with 10 points.

Eldon (7-19) will take on top-seeded Clinton at 6 p.m. Thursday in the semifinals. Clinton (13-12) defeated Sherwood 64-50 in Tuesday's first-round action.

On the other side of the bracket, third-seeded Versailles won 85-64 against Butler and second-seeded Warsaw cruised to a 67-34 win against Butler.
