PECULIAR, Mo. — The Jefferson City Jays have all 13 of their wrestlers still alive after the opening day of the Class 4 District 3 Tournament.
Eight Jays — Garrett Butel at 113 pounds (2-0), Christian Strope at 120 (2-0), Clayton Hurley at 132 (1-0), Will Kuster at 145 (2-0), Sam Rackers at 152 (2-0), Will Berendzen at 160 (1-0). Brant Aulber at 182 (1-0) and Brandon Backues at 220 (1-0) — are undefeated and will wrestle in today's semifinals.
Butel and Rackers won both of their matches by first-period falls, while Strope also won twice by fall. Kuster won by a fall and by a technical fall. Hurley, Berendzen, Aulber and Backues all had their wins come by first-period pins.
Anakin Gray at 106 (0-1), Xavier Adams at 126 (0-1), Michael Friederich at 138 (1-1), Dawson Prenger at 170 (0-1), Cory Denney at 195 (0-1) and Mathias Wieberg at 285 (0-1) will take part in the wrestlebacks.
Jefferson City is second in the team standings with 59.5 points. Raymore-Peculiar leads the 15-team tournamnent with 69, while Carthage is third at 58.5.
Action will resume at 10 a.m. today.
The top four finishers in each weight class will advance to next week's Class 4 state tournament at Mizzou Arena. The three-day tournament will begin Thursday.
