WARDSVILLE - The Blair Oaks Falcons weren't going to show too much of their play-calling schemes during Friday's Blair Oaks Jamboree at the Falcon Athletic Complex.

That being said, Blair Oaks coach Ted LePage was still pleased with what he saw from his team.

"We didn't really prepare for (the Jamboree)," LePage said, adding his team used this week's practices to prepare for the season opener against Maryville. "We wanted to see if we would adjust and react, and I thought our kids did."

Blair Oaks opened the first of its three scrimmages against Helias. On the first play from scrimmage, Jake Closser intercepted a pass downfield from Helias quarterback Jacob Weaver.

LePage said the thing he doesn't like about Jamborees is plays like that aren't momentum-shifting plays, since the defense stays on the field for 12 consecutive plays, regardless of turnovers.

"From that standpoint, I thought we were ready to play," he said.

Helias followed the interception with a pair of touchdowns, one passing and one rushing. Blair Oaks had just one touchdown during its 12-play sequence against the Crusaders, a 31-yard pass on fourth-and-1 from quarterback Dylan Hair to Closser.

For the rest of the Jamboree, the Blair Oaks defense held its opponents out of the end zone.

"As the sessions wore on, I thought we continued to climb, and that's what you like to see out of a good football team," LePage said.

Hair started all three scrimmages at quarterback. In the second matchup against Southern Boone, he completed an 8-yard touchdown pass to Closser. In the final scrimmage against Owensville, Hair threw another TD pass to Closser for 12 yards, then followed with a 40-yard touchdown throw to Carson Prenger.

For the night, Hair was 6-of-13 for 140 yards with four touchdowns and one interception. He also led the rushing attack with two carries for 34 yards, including a 28-yard gain on a run-pass option play.

"He's pretty electric, and you got to see that," LePage said. "One of the times he took off he can really run. So we're excited about his possibilities."

Gavin Wekenborg and Cade Stockman also played at quarterback. Wekenborg threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Cadon Garber on the Falcons' final offensive play against Southern Boone.

Blair Oaks finished the night with six touchdowns, three of which came against Owensville. Riley Lentz added a 3-yard touchdown against Owensville on his only rushing attempt of the night.

"We're going to be really pleased to see what that guy blossoms into this year," LePage said. "He's going to be a stud back."

The Falcons committed just three penalties in the Jamboree, but a holding penalty negated what would have been a 37-yard touchdown pass against Southern Boone.

Blair Oaks' defense had fourth-down stops against Southern Boone and Owensville, and Levi Haney also recorded an interception against Owensville, giving the Falcons two takeaways on the night.

"You're never ready for everything you're going to see, but right now, I like where our conditioning is at, I like where our chemistry is at and I like the way we're headed," LePage said. "We keep moving the bar up."

Blair Oaks plays Maryville at 7 p.m. next Friday at William Jewell College in Liberty.
