The Helias Lady Crusaders normally spend halftime on the sideline for their talk during the 10-minute intermission.

Wednesday night, they went to the locker room at the Crusader Athletic Complex for an "inspirational" talk.

"I knew how loud I was going to get," Helias coach Jay Hebenheimer said. "We needed a little spark to get moving."

Tied at 1 at the half, Helias took the lead for good with a goal in the opening minute on its way to a 5-1 victory against the Rolla Lady Bulldogs.

"We know we're not going to be awesome every night, this was one that we needed a little push to get going," Hebenheimer said. "When I got into the locker room, they were already talking, they knew they were going to have to fix some things because that wasn't us on the field in the first half."

It was a quick fix as Hannah Loethen scored at the 39:09 mark of the second half, assisted by Grace Winegar.

Seven minutes later, Lainy Lamb made it 3-1 on a goal assisted by Morgan Yanskey.

"It was lights out, we were clicking on all cylinders," Hebemheimer said. "We are starting to read each other, learning the system and it's paying off."

Maggie Winegar scored Helias' final two goals.

The first came with a little less than 24 minutes left on a low liner, assisted by Grace Winegar. The senior got her second on a shot into the upper part of the net with about five minutes to play off an assist by Lamb.

"Maggie is playing out of her mind this year, she's on top of her game," Hebenheimer said. "She's one of our best leaders."

Helias got on the board with about 16 minutes left in the first half when Izzy Luebbert took a pass from Grace Winegar and scored.

"I think we were a little nervous in the first half because it was our first home game, the first game in front of a lot of our fans," Hebenheimer said.

Rolla (1-3-3) tied it three minutes later on one of the few good scoring opportunities it had in the game.

"We understand that we need our defense to keep the ball out of our defensive third and we've done a very good job of that," Hebenheimer said.

It was the fifth straight win for the Lady Crusaders (5-1).

"The chemistry that we did not have a lot of the time last year, we definitely have this year," Hebenheimer said. "It's almost the same team back, but they are working together so much better this year.

"We absolutely believe we can play with anybody in the state right now."

The Lady Crusaders figure to face three difficult games Friday and Saturday at a tournament in St. Louis as they will take on St. Joseph's Academy, Cor Jesu and Nerinx Hall.

"It's going to be a tough weekend, but we play teams like that to get us ready for the postseason," Hebenheimer said. "We want to be challenged."

Helias won Wednesday's shortened JV game 5-0.
