Lady Jays get second volleyball win in two days, defeat Lebanon

Jefferson City volleyball coach Lisa Hoffmeyer challenged the Lady Jays to "control your controllables" such as effort and communication.

The Lady Jays passed the test Wednesday, defeating Lebanon 25-20, 25-14 at Fleming Fieldhouse.

"We were pretty proud of them tonight," Hoffmeyer said. "A little bit timid maybe in that first set then we kind of loosened up and started playing a little bit faster paced volleyball, a little bit better volleyball. Then I felt like they did a really nice job from there forward."

The Lady Jays built an early 11-4 lead in the second set, including a kill by Sydney Vogt to make it 10-4.

"She's doing a really nice job," Hoffmeyer said of Vogt, a sophomore getting time with the varsity after playing junior varsity to start the season. "She has stepped up tremendously. We knew defensively she would be OK, she would be able to hold her own and she's really stepped up."

Vogt finished with six kills, five digs and an ace.

Jefferson City kept the advantage growing, leading 19-7 after a kill from Zoe Stratman, who had five kills and four digs.

Lebanon and Jefferson City went back-and-forth the rest of the set. The Lady Yellowjackets cut it to nine points three times, but couldn't get any closer.

An Annabelle Maassen kill made it 23-12 and Vogt added another kill for a 24-14 lead to help close out the match.

Maassen led the Lady Jays with 10 kills to go along with eight digs. Maddie Jones also tallied eight digs and Paige Reeser collected team-highs in assists (21) and digs (11).

It was Jefferson City's second victory in as many days as the Lady Jays defeated Camdenton 25-19, 20-25, 25-22 Tuesday on the road.

Maassen recorded double-digit kills (12) and digs (13), Stratman finished with seven kills and a team-high 16 digs, Ella Wang added six kills and Vogt contributed four kills and nine digs. Reeser led with 28 assists to go with nine digs and two aces.

Jefferson City (14-9-1) is off until Oct. 6 when it plays in the Lebanon Pink Fest.

"It'll be kind of a nice week for us," Hoffmeyer said. "Our kids have been hitting it pretty hard."

In JV action Wednesday, Jefferson City fell 25-12, 25-21 to drop its record to 7-10-1.

The Jefferson City freshman team is 6-13-1 after a 25-13, 25-9 loss to Lebanon.

Grace Kempker had seven digs and Jordyn Hetzel tallied four aces for Jefferson City.
