Swinfard leads area golfers at Class 2 state championship

Jefferson City senior Sami Swinfard shot a 17-over 89, putting herself in a tie for 38th place after Monday's first round at the Class 2 state championships at Swope Memorial Golf Course in Kansas City.

Swinfard made three birdies, five pars and 10 bogeys in her opening round.

Also competing at state for the Lady Jays is Grafton Craighead, who is tied for 81st with a 105.

Helias junior Skylar Nelson is tied for 46th place after shooting a 91 in her opening round. She had six pars and six bogeys.

Greta Hinds is tied for 55th with a 93, while Natalie Beck is tied for 67th with a 97 for the Lady Crusaders.

St. Joseph's Academy leads the team standings with a 313 in the first round. Notre Dame de Sion is second with a 319, followed by Rock Bridge in third with a 336.

Megan Propeck of Notre Dame de Sion and Brooke Biermann of Lafayette: Wildwood each hold a four-shot lead in the individual standings. Propeck and Biermann each carded a 1-under 71 in the first round.

In the Class 1 state championships, Eldon's Kassidy Hull is near the top of the leadership after shooting an 11-over 83 in the first round at Mozingo Lake Recreational Park Course in Maryville.

Hull is in third place, recording one birdie and six pars to go with 10 bogeys.

Springfield Catholic boasts the top two golfers in the individual standings. Kayla Pfitzner is the leader with an 8-over 80, one stroke ahead of fellow teammate Reagan Zibilski.

Halie Rackers of Blair Oaks is 19th after shooting a 93. Rackers had one birdie, five pars and five bogeys.

Play was stopped Monday night due to darkness with eight groups still waiting to finish their first rounds.

Among those needing to finish the first round is Sydney Riley of School of the Osage. Riley is 33 over through 14 holes and will resume play on the fifth hole when play resumes at 8:30 a.m. today.

Eugene's Logan Belt was one hole short of finishing her first round when play stopped. Belt is at 40 over and will pick up on the ninth hole today.

Springfield Catholic leads the team standings with a 362, one stroke better than John Burroughs. MICDS is third with a 366.

A decision regarding a potential start to Round 2 will be made today following the conclusion of Round 1.
