Helias wins Ozark Grand Slam, Rockers reaches milestone

OZARK, Mo. - The Helias Lady Crusaders finished their regular season Saturday with a tournament title at the Ozark Grand Slam.

Helias posted a 2-0-1 record in the Red Pool to finish first.

The Lady Crusaders opened with a 25-14, 25-17 win against Glendale, then split with O'Fallon Christian, winning the first set 25-21 while dropping the second 19-25. Helias finished pool play with a 25-11, 25-12 win against Carl Junction.

Ellie Rockers recorded her 1,000th career kill in the first match of the day against Glendale. She is the first Lady Crusader to reach that milestone, and according to the Missouri State High School Activities Association record book, she is the 14th player in state history to reach 1,000 kills.

Helias had a rematch against Carl Junction in the first round of bracket play, sweeping the Lady Bulldogs again 25-21, 25-16 to advance to the gold bracket.

The Lady Crusaders won 25-13, 25-21 against Ozark in the semifinals to reach the championship. Helias claimed its third tournament title this season by beating Lafayette: Wildwood 25-23, 25-23 in the championship match.

Rockers led Helias with 68 kills in the tournament and added 45 digs. Rockers also broke the school single-season kills record in the match against O'Fallon Christian and has 384 kills following the tournament.

Korie Otto was second on the Lady Crusaders with 35 kills and added 12 blocks, while Meagan Engelbrecht had 23 kills, 35 service points and 34 digs. Callie Henson added 21 kills.

Riley Bernskoetter had a team-high 98 assists to go with 28 digs, while Jada Oldham had 47 assists and 31 service points. Krystal Brauner finished with 65 digs, 14 service aces and 33 service points.

Bernskoetter, Brauner and Rockers were named to the all-tournament team.

Helias (33-1-2), ranked No. 21 nationally in the MaxPreps high school girls volleyball top 25 poll, is off this week before opening play in the Class 3 District 9 Tournament at California. The top-seeded Lady Crusaders await the first-round winner between School of the Osage and Eldon at 5 p.m., Oct. 24 in the district semifinals.
