It wasn't quite the start to the season Blair Oaks wanted.

The Falcons began Thursday night's Helias Jamboree at Rackers Fieldhouse with a 30-10 loss to Helias, then fell 31-25 to Father Tolton.

The good news is those results don't count and they did get a 27-19 victory against Jefferson City in their third and final scrimmage.

"We definitely learned some things about ourselves tonight and where we're at and what we need to do to get better," Blair Oaks coach Ryan Fick said.

The Falcons began the night in a 10-1 hole against the Crusaders.

"They got up and guarded really, really well and our guys struggled," Fick said. "They just made us uncomfortable. That's a credit to them. They get out and guard really hard."

It was 12-3 by the end of the first of two six-minute quarters.

Blair Oaks' Eric Northweather made the first bucket of the second quarter with a layup and added a 3-pointer to make it 16-10 Helias with 4:02 left.

Blair Oaks got down early against the Trailblazers, but Trent Martin and Webb Villmer each knocked down a 3-pointer for a 9-8 lead.

Tolton built its lead to 24-17 before a pair of free throws from Villmer and another Martin 3 to pull within 24-22 with a couple minutes left.

"In the Father Tolton and Jefferson City scrimmages I thought we looked a little more relaxed, more comfortable and played much harder," Fick said.

Tolton closed out the game as Jonny Berndt made two free throws, Beau Washer stole the ball and Nate Schwartze added a free throw for the final points of the game.

Northweather got Blair Oaks off to a hot start against the Jays with a tip-in, a dunk, a jumper and a 3-pointer for a 9-2 run.

"In both of those scrimmages we knocked some shots down early and when you're making shots it's a lot easier to have the intensity, the want-to to play defense," Fick said.

The Jays got within 17-15 in the second quarter, but the Falcons only allowed four points the rest of the game.

Blair Oaks will open the regular season Nov. 26 in the Tri-County Tournament at Southern Boone.
