The schedule worked against Anna Vollet's goal.

Vollet, a Helias senior, was looking to improve on her best effort of the season in the long jump Friday in the Class 4 state track and field championships at Adkins Stadium. That meant bettering the mark of 18 feet, 5 inches she reached in the district meet two weeks ago.

But there was the matter of having to run in the 200-meter dash.

"I would have liked to have had a PR (personal record)," Vollet said. "But the finals were at the same time as the 200 again."

Vollet opened with a jump of 17-5.25 before popping an even 18-feet on her second attempt. And soon it was time to go run in the preliminary of the 200.

"I wasn't expecting to do much after that," Vollet said.

After sprinting in the 200, the best of her three jumps in the final round was 17-8.75. So the 18-foot effort was stood and was good enough to take third in Class 4.

"I'm just happy to place better than last year," Vollet, who was fourth in the event in 2017.

Vollet accounted for all of the Lady Crusaders' six team points Friday. She has a chance to score more today after advancing to the finals in the 100- and 200-meter dashes.

Vollet will start with the 100, in which she had the fourth-quickest qualifying time of 12.37. Vollett, who is looking to better her PR of 12.21 in the sprint, was seventh in the 100 last year at state.

Later in the afternoon, Vollet will run in the 200. She had the second-best qualifying time of 25.05.

"I really would like to get under 25 seconds," she said.

She was second in the 200 last year.

Vollet and the Lady Crusaders didn't advance to today's finals in the 4x100-meter relay after dropping the baton on their way to a finish of 15th.

"The 4x100 did not go as planned, obviously," Vollet said.

The Lady Crusaders will also run in the finals-only 4x800-meter relay today at 10:30 a.m. Chloe Ramsey will attempt to defend her state title in the pole vault for Helias beginning at noon.

Washington, which had Mikayla Reed win both the 800- and 1,600-meter runs Friday, leads the team race after six events with 35 points. Kearney is second with 17, while Warrensburg is third with 16. MICDS and Bolivar are tied for fourth with 13.

Helias in a five-way tie for 13th with its six points.

It was day for records for the Helias boys Friday.

It started with the finals in the 4x800-meter relay, where the Crusaders finished fourth with a time of 7:58.67. That is more than 10 seconds better than the foursome of Jack Hoey, Jacob Ceglinski, Nick Brandt and Jack Crull had posted this season.

The day closed with the preliminaries of the 4x400-meter relay. The team of Marcus Anthony, Jack Crull, Isaac Johnson and Blake Veltrop posted a time of 3:22.51, fourth-best in the event and tops in school history by about a second.

Anthony also advanced to today's final in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 39.62, the fourth-best Friday.

The Crusaders will also be in three finals-only events today. At 9:30 a.m., Auston Phillips will compete in the shot put. Crull will be in the 800- and 1,600-meter runs in the afternoon.

Through five events Friday, Helias is tied for 15th with five points.

Carthage leads the field with 22 points, with Warrensburg in second with 16 and Willard is third with 15. West Plains, Platte County and Grandview are tied for fourth with 14.
