Helias baseball, girls soccer in sectional action today

With district titles won last week, the Helias baseball and girls soccer teams will continue postseason play today with road games in the sectional round of the state playoffs.

The baseball Crusaders (20-7) will square off with the Bolivar Liberators (15-9) at 5 p.m. in Bolivar.

The Crusaders and Liberators are familiar foes in the postseason. Helias blanked Bolivar 10-0 in the sectional around last season at the American Legion Post 5 Sports Complex and was a 5-1 winner in the 2016 district title game played at School of the Osage.

The winner will take on the winner of the sectional between Aurora (27-1) and Nevada (15-8) on Thursday. With a win, Helias would host Nevada or play at Aurora.

The Lady Crusaders (12-12) will meet the Notre Dame de Sion Storm (19-0) for the third straight year in the soccer sectional round.

The Storm defeated the Lady Crusaders 1-0 last year at the 179 Soccer Park on their way to a second-place finish in the state tournament. Notre Dame de Sion won the state title in 2016 after defeating Helias 3-0 in the sectionals.

The Helias-Notre Dame de Sion winner will face either Grain Valley (22-3-1) or Kearney (20-1) in the quarterfinals Saturday. With a victory today, Helias would host Kearney or play at Grain Valley.
