California, Linn to compete for golf team trophies

The California Pintos and the Linn Wildcats will bid for state golf championships starting today.

California has qualified for the Class 2 championships, scheduled for Meadow Lake Acres Country Club.

The Pintos advanced by winning both the district and sectional tournament titles.

Jordan Bondurant, Chris Cassil, Jordan Geiser, Liam Glenn and Matt Hurt all earned all-district honors for the Pintos. Geiser then led California in sectionals by finishing second.

California finished sixth as a team at state last season. Geiser tied for 70th last season to lead the returners for the Pintos, while Hurt tied for 82nd.

The Blair Oaks Falcons and Versailles Tigers both advanced two individuals to state.

Jake Closer and Jarod Steinbeck will participate for the Falcons. Closser finished fifth at sectionals, while Steinbeck tied for ninth. Steinbeck was 23rd at state last season.

Ori Bartlett and Garrett Boatwright advanced for the Tigers after tying for sixth in the sectional. Bartlett was 44th at state last season.

Other teams returning to the Class 2 state tournament are: Palmyra, which finished second in a scorecard playoff with Hermann; Bishop LeBlond, which finished third; and Willow Springs, which finished seventh.

Linn will play in the Class 1 championships at Rivercut Golf Course in Springfield. The Wildcats advanced by taking second in the district and sectional tournaments.

Nicholas Kucsik, James McCuskey, Kole Peters, Alek Peters and Ethan Russell will represent the Wildcats at state. The five all earned all-district honors. Kole Peters led Linn at sectionals by finishing sixth.

Tristan Bolin of Tipton will play as an individual in the tournament for the fourth straight year. Bolin was second in the sectional tournament after winning the district championship. He tied for 22nd at state last year, tied for 43rd in 2016 and tied for 32nd in 2015.

Gallatin returns as the two-time defending Class 1 state team champion.

Ethan Kline from School of the Osage is an individual qualifier in the Class 3 state tournament at Old Kinderhook in Camdenton.
